The Old Spaghetti Factory, Denver: These Policies are a Trend and Haven't Hurt our Business

The Old Spaghetti Factory is a fine-Italian family restaurant serving the region, opening 30 years ago allowing smoking in some sections. Leading the trend towards smoke-free dining that we have experienced in Oregon, California and Utah, we converted the remaining smoking section – our bar – to smoke-free last year.

We have not suffered any overall losses because of it, receiving very few complaints and hearing many compliments. The economy in Denver is the only detriment to our business.

Being smoke free has been an asset to the business:

• Our non-smoking employees appreciate our decision – no more breathing second-hand smoke and enduring the health risks. In fact, all employees have supported our smoke-free policy.

• No smoke migrates into the smoke-free areas, including the waiting area.

• Our cloth window coverings and lampshades are much cleaner.

• There are fewer stains, and no more smell of stale cigarettes.

I can’t think of a better way to complete the City Council’s term than to pass this ordinance and we encourage Denver to adopt a smoke-free restaurant ordinance.
